Default explain PvP please

I don't have guildwars yet.. Can someone please explain guildwars PvP to me? I was told every area except towns were instanced, how do you go around killing people if everything is instanced? someone said you can only pk in groups, that's lame.. you have to make a group and go to a "duel arena" or whatever and fight people? can't roam around and find people to kill like mordred? whats the max group limit?

From what I hear the usual PvP is 8 vs. 8.

I think there are certain PvP missions or guild wars that might have multiple groups. I don't know...not that far yet myself. But, you're right as far as the dueling goes, you can't just run around and kill people.

This is basically correct. PvP combat is limited to PvP areas- you can't run around and "gank n00bs". PvP is consentual- you can't backstab someone in a mission, or just "go around killing people". Instead, you join a group in a PvP area like the Tombs of the Primeevil Kings, or go to a random arena like Fort Koga, and fight one group versus another. If you're looking for a game where you can go around having fun by spoiling other peoples fun, GW probably isn't for you.

On the other hand, the PvP combat in GW is really enjoyable, and is actually skill based rather than taking a level 20 character versus a level 10 character and wiping the floor with them. Everyone playing PvP knows what they're getting into, and the classes and skills are balanced so that no one player is going to have an advantage, so long as their opponents have an idea of what they're doing. Personal skill, teamwork, and tactics with a bit of random chance thrown in the mix sometimes determines who will win or lose a match- not level or equipment.

But, Freyas, from my admittedly limited experience in the last couple of days...

The times I've played PVP there is a problem. If you just join a "mission" you're thrown in with a random group of people. My first fight was great, we won two rounds without a problem. Then I ended up back at the fort. So I clicked enter mission again. It was a rout. The difference? In the first instance, the warriors (myself and another, both W/Ms) were in front, the casters held back. When I needed to heal I did.

The second time it was a free-for-all. Quick wipe.

The next few times I said, "Let's try to focus on one enemy at a time. Someone call him. Or go for the caster."

Didn't happen. Everyone ran for the bridge and bang, wipeout.

I think there is a bit of an experience issue. If you end up with a random group, you get random abilities. And since the game is new, you are more likely than not to get totally clueless people in your group. That's not a slam. Just a fact.

There are different types of PvP. The arena type (the one it looks like you where playing) is all random you cant form a party, and the other type is picked teams (i.e. the crag and HoH). It just depends where you are at.

Discord, don't judge GW's PvP on the (Ascalon?) arena, as it's too chaotic.

There are other arenas later in the game with different objectives, and in some of them you can choose your own team before you enter.

The really fun PvP is at the Tombs (8 player teams, tournament style play) and Guild vs Guild (8 player team, either attack the enemies hall or protect your own, depends on your ladder standings).

Not sure if we're on the same page here. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm talking about starting a pure PVP char on the PVP server. Start at lev 20.

I start in a fort (can't remember the name). On the world map there are other PVP areas. The one I'm in is for 4v4 groups. If there are other options in that particular area, I'm too much of a noob to have found them yet.

I also have chars on the RP server. I haven't done any PVP there yet, assuming that it can be done.

Don't get me wrong, I love the game in both forms. I just mention the fact that PVP can be problematic when you have people that are new to online multiplayer completely. Some of us have a clue about teamwork from other MMORPGs. A lot of people are just without clue #1 in GW due to the free online play.

from what I've heard, you're put in a arena with your group/guild and the enemy guild/group is at the other end of the arena yes? then you just click the softest target and everyone /assists and it's a battle of who loses the most dps first or who loses the most healing power, it just doesnt seem fun to me,, I don't know how the pvp rewards system works(if there even is one) but I don't like running 8mans, i've always ran in smaller groups and stalked the bigger groups and hit when they were weak and ran away to recoup, guerilla tactics etc, .. when you're set into a zone or frontier you have to choose where to move etc and have the possibility to flank other people or lock down an area, getting thrown into an arena and having the enemy right in front of me is just meh, i like not knowing where he is, i feel it creates a more fun environment to play in, the hunter and his prey etc

However, I could be wrong and the arena is a instanced zone and you both start out of clipping range etc and have to look for each other, but you still know exactly how many are out there and most likely their class
